AI Overviews, AI Mode and being cited

How do you show up when the answer is generated rather than listed?

  • AI Overviews
  • AI Mode
  • grounding
  • citation
  • nosnippet
  • GEO
  • generative AI reports

Read first: The results page is not ten blue links, Measurement: what the numbers mean

This is the part of SEO that is genuinely unsettled. Treat confident advice here — including anything labelled "GEO" or "AEO" with a methodology to sell — with suspicion, and anchor on what is observable.

The surfaces

AI Overviews — a generated answer above the results, with citations. As of August 2026 it expands to full-page on some queries by default, removing the "Show more" control.

AI Mode — a fully conversational search surface, increasingly promoted as an entry point from ordinary Search, and being tested with sign-in prompts. A signed-in AI Mode is personalised, which makes any single "ranking" for those queries less meaningful.

These are grounded systems: they retrieve from the index and generate over what they retrieve. Being retrievable is still the prerequisite.

What Google says

Google's position is deliberately unglamorous: there are no special optimisations for AI features, no separate ranking process to game, and normal SEO best practice is what applies. Its published AI-features guidance and generative-AI optimisation guide both say the same thing — make unique, genuinely useful, non-commodity content, and be technically retrievable.

You can control inclusion of snippets with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. That is a blunt trade: excluding yourself from AI answers also generally means excluding yourself from the visibility.

What practitioners observe

Citation is concentrated. Pages that answer a specific sub-question crisply, in self-contained passages, get cited more than pages that bury the answer in narrative. Being already visible in classic results correlates strongly with being cited. Comparison tables, clearly-scoped definitions and explicit data points are quotable in a way that long build-ups are not.

None of that contradicts Google's guidance; it is what "useful, well-structured content" looks like when a machine is extracting from it.

Measuring it

Before June 2026 this was largely unmeasurable with first-party data. Search Console now provides generative AI performance reports — dedicated views of impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. That is now the first place to look, ahead of any third-party "AI visibility" tool.

What trips people up

  • Buying a separate "GEO strategy" when the underlying work is the same work.
  • Blocking AI features to protect traffic, then losing the visibility too.
  • Assuming your exposure is average. It depends entirely on your query mix.

You have got this when

You can hold two things at once: the fundamentals have not changed, and the click economics have — and you know which of your queries are exposed to which surface.
