AI Overviews start expanding to full-page answers by default
The one thing
Google confirmed AI Overviews now expand to their full state by default on some queries, dropping the "Show more" button and pushing organic results far below the fold. It is effectively AI Mode rendered inside ordinary Search. Google would not say what share of queries is affected, or whether it will grow. Treat a CTR decline this week at stable rankings as this, not as a ranking loss.
Also worth knowing
- Google Search had an indexing/serving incident on the 28th - content published in the preceding hour was not appearing, including at WSJ, NYT and CNN. Rule this out before investigating a same-day drop. (Search Engine Roundtable)
- OpenAI, Shopify and Cloudflare are shipping WebMCP, giving AI agents a declared way to act on a site instead of simulating clicks. Too early to act on; notable because it is shipping rather than proposed. (Search Engine Journal)
- Google is testing a sign-in prompt inside AI Mode. A signed-in AI Mode is a personalised one, which makes rank tracking less meaningful on those queries. (Search Engine Roundtable)
- John Mueller drew a useful line on update noise: when Google ships a blog post, policy change or docs update alongside an update, that is the signal it is actionable. Volatility without documentation is not. (Search Engine Roundtable, Search Engine Journal)
- The site reputation abuse EEA change landed the day before and dominated coverage today - see the 27 August digest.
Quiet but watch it
- Google's alcohol advertising policy updates on 30 September, expanding allowed locations. Worth a re-check for alcohol clients rather than assuming a market is closed.
- Favicon docs now list supported formats (BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, TIFF). SVG is absent - useful before an audit recommends it.
- Preferred Sources, Tailor Your Feed and Search Profiles are three distinct features being conflated. Expect the client question, not a ranking impact.
- Ahrefs published how they use AI in every article, including a 6-12 minute research-to-draft pipeline they deliberately do not scale. The constraint they describe is editorial judgement, not generation capacity.

Google is dynamically expanding AI Overviews for some queries
Search Engine Land ·
TLDR
- Google confirmed that for some queries AI Overviews now expand to their full state by default, removing the "Show more" button.
- The effect is an AI Mode-style answer inside ordinary Search, with the ten blue links pushed well below the fold.
- Google would not say what share of queries is affected, or whether it will grow. Expansion is cancelled if the user has already started scrolling.
Why it matters
This is the largest single reduction in above-the-fold organic real estate since AI Overviews launched. On affected queries the click is not competing with an AI answer - it is behind one.
What to do
- Segment Search Console by query intent and watch CTR at stable positions from this week; a CTR fall with flat impressions is this, not a ranking loss.
- Prioritise queries where the answer is not summarisable - comparisons, transactional and local intent are the least exposed.
Search Engine Roundtable covered the same change from the "Show more" button angle.
Google Search Having Indexing/Serving Issues August 28th
Search Engine Roundtable ·
TLDR
- Google Search had an indexing or serving incident on 28 August: content published in the preceding hour was not appearing in results.
- High-frequency publishers (WSJ, NYT, CNN) showed few or no new pages, which is how the problem surfaced.
Why it matters
A same-day traffic dip on 28 August is most likely this, not an algorithm change or a site problem. Misreading an incident as a penalty leads to changes you then cannot unwind.
What to do
- Before investigating a 28 August drop, check whether newly published URLs indexed normally that day.
WebMCP Connects AI Agents To Actions Inside Websites via @sejournal, @MattGSouthern
Search Engine Journal ·
TLDR
- OpenAI, Shopify and Cloudflare are shipping WebMCP in live products — a structured way for AI agents to take actions on a website rather than simulating visual clicks.
- The premise: sites declare what an agent can do, instead of agents inferring it from rendered UI.
Why it matters
If agents act through declared capabilities rather than the rendered page, the thing being optimised stops being the page and starts being the interface. That is a different discipline from technical SEO, and it arrives with the same three companies that already control a lot of the plumbing.
Too early to act on, and worth watching precisely because it is being shipped rather than proposed.
Google Announces Search Updates For Transparency, Actionable Updates Get Blog Posts
Search Engine Roundtable ·
TLDR
- John Mueller said Google announces search updates "primarily" to give site owners transparency.
- The useful distinction he drew: when Google ships a blog post, a policy change or help-centre documentation, that is the signal the update is actionable.
- Updates without that documentation are, by implication, not something to act on.
Why it matters
A rough triage rule for update noise. Ranking volatility with no accompanying documentation is not something you can respond to directly; volatility that arrives with a policy or docs change is.
Search Engine Journal covered the same exchange.
TLDR
- Google is testing a sign-in prompt inside the AI Mode response — a large Google logo and a "Sign in to save your..." button.
Why it matters
A signed-in AI Mode is a personalised, logged AI Mode. If Google succeeds in getting sign-in at this point in the journey, results become per-user and rank tracking becomes correspondingly less meaningful for those queries.
Still a test. Worth noting the direction, not reacting to it.
Google Alcohol Advertising Policy Update On September 30
Search Engine Roundtable ·
TLDR
- Google updates its alcohol advertising policy on 30 September 2026.
- The update revises country-specific guidelines, expands allowed advertising locations, and clarifies advertiser requirements and responsibilities.
Why it matters
An expansion, not a restriction — new markets may open for alcohol advertisers.
What to do
- Alcohol clients: re-check country eligibility after 30 September before assuming a market is still closed.
TLDR
- Ahrefs describes using AI in every article they publish, including a pipeline that researches, outlines, drafts and fact-checks a near-publishable article in 6-12 minutes.
- Their stated position is that they could produce tens of thousands of articles and deliberately do not.
Why it matters
Useful as a description of where the constraint actually sits: not in generation capacity but in editorial judgement. Vendor blog — the process description is the value, the tool pitch is the price.
Google Preferred Sources, Tailor Your Feed & Search Profiles Are Different
Search Engine Roundtable ·
TLDR
- Preferred Sources, Tailor Your Feed and Search Profiles are three different features, widely being discussed as if they were one.
- All three personalise what a user sees across Search, AI Mode and Discover, but through different mechanisms.
Why it matters
Mostly a clarity problem. Expect confused client questions conflating the three; none of them is a ranking lever.
TLDR
- Google's favicon documentation now lists the supported formats explicitly: BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF.
- A documentation clarification, not a behaviour change.
Why it matters
Removes a long-standing guess during technical audits. SVG is notably absent from the list.
