The results page is not ten blue links

Where does the click actually go on a modern results page?

  • SERP features
  • AI Overviews
  • AI Mode
  • zero-click
  • above the fold
  • position vs visibility

Read first: What "ranking" actually means

Beginners picture the results page as a list of ten links. It has not looked like that for years, and in 2026 it frequently does not contain a list at all until you scroll.

Understanding the layout matters because position and visibility are different things. Ranking first below an AI answer, a featured snippet, a video carousel and a set of ads is not the same as ranking first.

What occupies the page

Above and among the organic results you will find ads, AI Overviews, People Also Ask, knowledge panels, image and video carousels, local packs, and increasingly an entry point into AI Mode — Google's fully conversational surface. Each of these pushes the first organic result further down.

In August 2026 Google confirmed that AI Overviews now expand to their full state by default on some queries, removing the "Show more" button entirely. On those queries the page reads as an AI answer with results underneath, rather than results with an AI summary on top.

Zero-click is a spectrum, not a category

"Zero-click" describes a search satisfied without visiting a site. Some queries have always been like that — a currency conversion, a match score. What has changed is how far up the intent ladder it reaches. Explanatory and comparison queries that used to send traffic increasingly do not.

The correct response is not despair; it is knowing which of your queries are exposed. Queries where the answer is short, factual and summarisable are exposed. Queries needing a tool, a login, a purchase, local specifics or genuine subject depth are much less so.

Position without clicks

If your average position is stable and your clicks are falling, the page changed around you. That is a layout story, not a ranking story, and the fixes are different: you cannot fix it by improving the page's ranking, because the ranking is fine.

What trips people up

  • Reporting position as if it were traffic. They decoupled years ago.
  • Not looking at the actual SERP. Search your own key queries, on a phone, logged out. What you see is the product you are competing inside.
  • Assuming every query is equally exposed. Segment before you panic.

You have got this when

You can look at a Search Console chart with flat impressions, flat position and falling clicks and correctly say "the results page changed, not our ranking" — and name which queries to check first.
