Creative is half of ROI, and booking moves inside the ad

The one thing

Google put numbers behind creative quality on YouTube: Nielsen research attributing 49% of campaign ROI to creative, and Ekimetrics research finding creative improvements can more than double ROI. For Demand Gen in-stream skippable ads (US, July 2026), a human voice was associated with 12% higher conversions, supers or text overlay with 3%, and early brand visualisation also lifted conversions.

If creative is roughly half of ROI, it deserves roughly half the optimisation effort - which is not how most accounts allocate time against bids and targeting.

Also worth knowing

  • Google Ads book buttons are expanding to Search and Performance Max via Reserve with Google, previously limited to Local Service Ads and Maps. For appointment businesses the booking action now sits in the ad. (Search Engine Roundtable)
  • Google AI Mode now completes hotel bookings with 10 US partners, with hotels keeping merchant of record. The travel question shifts from winning the click to being one of the ten. (PPC Land)
  • AI agents gained write access to live ad campaigns during the week of 24-28 August. Read-only agents were a reporting convenience; write access makes change history the audit trail that matters. (PPC Land)

Quiet but watch it

  • Machine traffic passed human traffic on the open web this week, and Meta signed a $17.2bn teen safety settlement. Neither changes tomorrow's work; both shape the year.

Google says better YouTube creative can more than double ROI

Search Engine Land (PPC) ·

TLDR

  • Google published new YouTube creative guidance with numbers attached, citing Nielsen research that creative accounts for 49% of campaign ROI, and Ekimetrics research that improving creative can more than double ROI.
  • For Demand Gen in-stream skippable ads (US, July 2026 data): a human voice was associated with 12% higher conversions, supers or text overlay with 3% higher, and visualising the brand early also lifted conversions.
  • Guidance also covers removing fake buttons from image assets and making creative look native to YouTube.

Why it matters

If creative is roughly half of ROI, it deserves roughly half the optimisation effort — which is not how most accounts allocate time versus bids and targeting.

What to do

  • Audit current Demand Gen assets for the three cited elements: human voice, early brand visualisation, text overlay.
  • Drop fake-button image assets; they are called out explicitly.

Google Ads Book Buttons Expand To Search & Performance Max

Search Engine Roundtable (PPC) ·

TLDR

  • Google is expanding the book button (via Reserve with Google partner integration) to Search and Performance Max campaigns.
  • Previously this was limited to Local Service Ads and Maps ads.

Why it matters

A booking action directly in a Search or PMax ad shortens the path for appointment-based businesses and changes what the ad competes on.

What to do

  • If a client is already a Reserve with Google partner, check whether the book button now appears on Search and PMax and measure booking rate against the standard landing-page path.

TLDR

  • Google AI Mode now completes hotel bookings with 10 partners in a US rollout.
  • Hotels keep merchant of record, so the transaction is still theirs.
  • Flight alerts span 180 countries; five loyalty programs opened award data. EU availability is unresolved.

Why it matters

Booking completed inside the search surface removes the site visit that paid and organic both compete for. For travel advertisers the question shifts from winning the click to being one of the 10 partners.

What to do

  • Travel clients: find out what partner integration requires before the partner list is settled.

TLDR

  • Week of 24-28 August, per PPC Land's weekly roundup: AI agents gained write access to live ad campaigns.
  • Meta signed a $17.2 billion teen safety settlement.
  • Machine traffic passed human traffic on the open web.

Why it matters

Write access for agents is the line worth marking. Read-only agents were a reporting convenience; an agent that can change budgets and bids in a live account changes what "who changed this" means, and account change history becomes the audit trail that matters.

What to do

  • If you are trialling agent tooling, restrict it to a test account or read-only scopes until change-history attribution is proven.
