Turning reach into something
Reach is not the goal. What happens after someone watches?
- profile as landing page
- link strategy
- DM automation
- shopping
- attribution gap
Read first: Content that compounds
Reach is not the point. The account exists to produce something — subscribers, enquiries, sales, bookings. Almost all of that happens after the view, in places most accounts never optimise.
The profile is the landing page
A viewer who finds a Reel interesting goes to the profile next. That is the conversion page, and it usually gets less attention than a single post.
What it needs to do in about three seconds: say what you do and who for, show proof it is worth following, and offer one clear next step. The most common failure is a bio that is a slogan rather than a description — the viewer already saw the vibe, they are now asking "what is this account".
Pinned posts matter more than people think: they are the only part of the grid you control the order of.
Links are weak; DMs are strong
Instagram sends very little traffic off-platform, and links in bios convert at rates that disappoint everyone. Meanwhile, a conversation started in a DM converts far better than any link, because it is a conversation.
That is why "comment X and I'll send it" works — it is not a growth hack, it is moving the interaction to the surface where conversion actually happens. Use it honestly: send the thing.
Set up measurement before you need it
Off-platform attribution from Instagram is poor and getting poorer. Do the cheap things early: a dedicated landing page, UTM tags on every link you control, and a "how did you hear about us" field. Otherwise the channel will look like it does nothing, because nothing will be able to see it.
Shopping and in-app purchase
Where available, keeping the transaction in-app removes the weakest step. Whether it is right depends on margin and on how much you need the customer relationship — an in-app sale is a sale where the platform, not you, owns the customer.
What trips people up
- Optimising posts for months while the profile converts badly.
- Judging the channel on last-click when it is largely invisible to attribution.
- Adding five links so the viewer has to make a decision. One.
You have got this when
You can say what the single next step is for someone who just found you, and you have some way of counting how many take it.
