Diagnosing a reach drop

Views halved. Before reaching for the word "shadowban", work down this list — it will almost always be answered before you get to the bottom.

1. What is the baseline?

Instagram reach is extremely volatile. A single post reaching a fraction of the last one is usually noise, not signal. Compare rolling four-week averages, not posts.

If your average across a month has not moved, nothing has happened.

2. Which reach fell?

Split followers versus non-followers in insights.

• Non-follower reach fell — a recommendation change, or your recent content is being matched to fewer people. Normal, often recovers, sometimes reflects a format shift.
• Follower reach fell — your relationship with your audience weakened, or you posted less, or at different times.

These have different causes and different fixes. The aggregate number tells you neither.

3. Did you change format or cadence?

The most common real cause. Switching format resets what the system knows about who to show you to; a gap in posting does the same. Both recover, and both look alarming for two to three weeks.

4. Is the account restricted?

Instagram provides an account status view showing whether content has been marked non-recommendable or has violated policy. Check it. This is the actual, checkable version of what people call shadowbanning — and if it says nothing, you do not have one.

Common triggers are unoriginal reposted content, engagement bait, and misinformation flags on borrowed material.

5. Seasonality and events

Audiences disappear over holidays and during large public events. Compare to the same period last year before concluding anything.

6. Did the content get worse?

Uncomfortable but frequently the answer. Look at retention curves across the drop. If completion fell before reach did, that is your cause and the system is working as designed.

What trips people up

• Believing the shadowban explanation because it removes responsibility.
• Reacting within a week. You are reading noise and you will change the wrong thing.
• Posting more to recover, which usually deepens the decline.
