The formats and what each is for
Reels, carousels, stories, lives — which job does each actually do?

Read first: How Instagram decides who sees what
Each format on Instagram does a different job, and most underperformance is a format mismatch rather than a content-quality problem.
Reels — reach
Short video, distributed heavily to non-followers. This is the growth surface. It is also the most competitive, because it competes with everything else on the platform for the same attention.
What Reels asks for: retention. If people keep watching, it keeps being shown. Everything about the format — the first second, the pacing, the loop — exists in service of that.
Carousels — depth and saves
Multi-image posts. The mechanic that matters is that a carousel gets multiple chances: a viewer who does not stop on the first slide may still be shown a later one. They earn saves and sends better than any other format, which are strong signals.
Best for anything that benefits from sequence — an explanation, a before-and-after, a list with substance.
Stories — relationship, not reach
Shown almost entirely to existing followers. Stories will not grow an account, and judging them on reach is a category error. What they do is deepen the relationship with people who already follow you, which feeds back into connected reach. They are also where polls, questions and links live.
Lives and longer video — commitment
High effort, small audience, disproportionate depth with the people who show up. Worth it for launches, Q&As and community, not for distribution.
Choosing
Work backwards from the job:
- Need new audience → Reels.
- Need to teach something properly → carousel.
- Need existing followers to act → Stories.
- Need trust with a small committed group → Live.
Most accounts that feel stuck are posting one format for every job. The common version: publishing only Stories and wondering why the account is not growing, or publishing only Reels and wondering why the audience feels shallow.
What trips people up
- Comparing reach across formats and concluding Stories are broken.
- Reposting a Reel as a Feed video and expecting the same distribution.
- Making carousels that are one image split into ten. The sequence has to earn each swipe.
You have got this when
Before making something, you can say which format it should be and why — from the job it does, not from what you posted last time.
