Creator pricing has no price signal, and everyone knows it

The one thing

Half of marketers misprice creator fees and 40% think they overpaid, according to a survey of 1,000 marketing and procurement leaders. Practitioners quoted put the real figure higher.

The diagnosis is more useful than the numbers: there is no comparable-sales data in creator marketing. Every negotiation starts from the creator's asking price because nothing else exists to anchor on. The industry agrees it is a problem and disagrees on the fix, so nobody should expect a benchmark to arrive soon.

The practical response is to stop treating creator fees as a negotiation and start treating them as a media buy: price from expected reach against a comparable paid CPM, add a premium for the endorsement, and keep your own record of what you paid and what it returned. Your own history is currently the only trustworthy benchmark in the category.

Quiet but watch it

  • Agencies serving multicultural audiences are arguing that AI removes the scale advantage that always favoured the largest shops. Worth watching whether that shows up in account wins or stays a talking point.

TLDR

  • Survey of 1,000 marketing and procurement leaders by Billion Dollar Boy: half misprice creator fees, and 40% believe they overpaid.
  • Agency and platform executives quoted put it more bluntly — one estimates brands overpay roughly 90% of the time.
  • The diagnosis is a missing price signal. As Fohr's founder put it: imagine a housing market where you could never look up what the house next door sold for.

Why it matters

Creator budgets have grown into a serious line item without the pricing infrastructure that every other media channel has. There is no rate card, no comparable-sales data and no independent benchmark, so each negotiation starts from nothing and anchors on whatever the creator asks.

The industry agrees there is a problem and does not agree on a fix, which means this is not resolving soon.

What to do

  • Price creator deals from expected outcome — reach against a comparable paid CPM, plus a premium for the endorsement — rather than from the asking figure.
  • Record what you paid and what it delivered. Your own history is currently the only benchmark you can trust.
